Can Men Suffer From Menopause?

Updated: Apr 2, 2021

Hello lovely people,

This month my blog is based on a question asked by a male client. Yes, men do suffer from menopause, it is a condition that can affect men in their older years and is linked to a decline of testosterone levels and age.

Referred to as andropause, androgen decline in the ageing male, some men will develop depression, loss of sex drive, erectile dysfunction and other physical and emotional symptoms when they reach late 40’s to early '50s.

Here are some more symptoms men may experience:

Mood swings and irritability

Loss of muscle mass and reduced ability to exercise

Difficulty sleeping or increased tiredness

A lack of energy or interest

Fat redistribution, such as developing a large belly or “man boobs”

Poor memory and a lack of concentration

Let’s be clear, this is not a “midlife crisis” which is an anxiety issue caused by men panicking or overthinking that they have reached life’s halfway mark. If your GP thinks the above symptoms are more than likely caused by a mental health issue like stress or anxiety, they may suggest that meditation or therapy such as (CBT)cognitive behavioural therapy be more of help.

Can men get hormone replacement therapy?

The answer is yes, your GP will order some blood tests to measure your testosterone levels and if the results show a deficiency you may be referred to an endocrinologist, a specialist in hormone problems. Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, you may be offered testosterone replacement to relieve the symptoms.

This treatment may be either:

  • Injection

  • Implants

  • Gels

  • Patches

  • Tablets
